The versatility of a PhD or EdD in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Nutrition opens the door to several career paths. Graduates of this program are well-prepared to take on leadership roles in a variety of exercise science settings, including:
Work directly with athletes to optimize their nutrition, helping them improve performance, speed up recovery, and reduce the risk of injury Liberty Slots Bonus Codes. From NFL and NBA teams to Olympic athletes, the need for sports nutrition experts is essential at all levels.
The first step to becoming a sports dietitian or sports nutritionist is to earn a bachelor’s degree in nutrition. To qualify, the program you choose must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
If you’re interested in advancing your career and are already a registered dietician with a minimum of one year of professional experience, ASU Online offers a Master of Science in nutritional science with a concentration in dietetics program. Focusing on the scientific foundations of nutrition, this program aims to accelerate your career with the in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience needed to succeed. This program also offers the NTR 555 course, Nutrition and the Athlete, which covers the study of current practices in sports nutrition.
The roots of FSU Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences date back to the university’s establishment, and it is the oldest college of its kind in Florida. Recently expanded in 2023, the College is home to six academic departments united through a common goal to maximize human potential. In total, the College includes the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, Department of Educational Psychology & Learning Systems, Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences, Department of Human Development & Family Science, Department of Sport Management, School of Teacher Education, numerous research centers, and three laboratory schools (Florida State University School, FSU Pembroke Pines Charter School, and The Collegiate School at FSU Panama City). In 2024, the college was named after alumna and teacher Anne Spencer Daves.
Saunders MJ, Moore RW, Kies AK, Luden ND, Pratt CA. Carbohydrate and protein hydrolysate coingestions improvement of late-exercise time-trial performance. Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab. 2009;19:136–49.
For example, Moore found that muscle and albumin protein synthesis was optimized at approximately 20 g of egg protein at rest. Witard et al. provided incremental doses of whey protein (0, 10, 20 and 40 g) in conjunction with an acute bout of resistance exercise and concluded that a minimum protein dose of 20 g optimally promoted MPS rates. Finally, Yang and colleagues had 37 elderly men (average age of 71 years) consume incremental doses of whey protein isolate (0, 10, 20 and 40 g/dose) in combination with a single bout of lower body resistance exercise and concluded that a 40 g dose of whey protein isolate is needed in this population to maximize rates of MPS. Furthermore, while results from these studies offer indications of what optimal absolute dosing amounts may be, Phillips concluded that a relative dose of 0.25 g of protein per kg of body weight per dose might operate as an optimal supply of high-quality protein. Once a total daily target protein intake has been achieved, the frequency and pattern with which optimal doses are ingested may serve as a key determinant of overall changes in protein synthetic rates.

Intensive physical exercise that competitive sports athletes participate in can negatively affect their pro-oxidative–antioxidant balance. Compounds with high antioxidant potential, such as those present in ch…
The effect of insulin on MPS is dependent on its ability to increase amino acid availability, which does not occur when insulin is systematically increased (e.g., following feeding) . In particular, insulin’s impact on net protein balance seems to operate most powerfully in an anti-catabolic manner on muscle . However, insulin-mediated effects that reduce muscle protein breakdown peaks at low to moderate levels of insulin (~15–30 μIU/mL) that can be achieved by consumption of a 45-g dose of whey protein isolate alone . Taken together, these results seem to indicate that post-workout carbohydrate supplementation offers very little contribution from a muscle development standpoint provided adequate protein is consumed. For example, Staples and colleagues compared the impact of a carbohydrate + protein combination on rates of MPS and reported no further increases in MPS beyond what was seen with protein ingestion alone. Importantly, these results are not to be interpreted to mean that carbohydrate administration offers no potential effect for an athlete engaging in moderate to high volumes of training, but rather that benefits derived from carbohydrate administration appear to more favorably impact aspects of muscle glycogen recovery as opposed to stimulating muscle protein accretion.
A nutritionist or dietitian working in a fitness setting provides nutrition consultations for members and offers eating plans for weight loss and improved health. In addition, the development of nutrition education programs, creating handouts and writing newsletter articles are all possible duties in this position.
Becoming certified by organizations recognized by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence can make you more competitive when trying to land a sports nutrition job. An exercise certification through the American College of Sports Medicine is well respected in the field.
Nutritionists in private practice may also be hired to consult for individual athletes or teams for special competitions such as the Olympics. Some jobs may be available in stores and for companies which sell sports nutrition supplements.
